12. The Chronological Resume.

<< Previous or Next >>

The Chronological Resume is organized around your work history and is the most commonly used resume layout. Accepted by employers and search firms, who are looking to see what you did and when you did it. It’s structured to quickly highlight your career to date and how your skills and abilities are directly applicable to their needs.

This resume layout can be used by most job searchers who:
  • have a mostly consistent record of employment,
  • can show progression or consistency from position to position,
Since every position in this resume style is listed in order from the most recent to the oldest it does not always work well for those who:
  • have gaps in their employment dates,
  • have been out of the job market for some time, or
  • looking to change careers to something new or something they did in the distant past.

This resume layout works best for those who want to continue doing what they just finished doing, or whose career has been on a steady track of progression within a particular field, without much deviation into other arenas.

You can modify the chronological resume, by changing the order of the sections, to make the resume layout fit different situations:

The chronological resume can be structured in four different ways to emphasize certain skills or experiences:

  1. Traditional chronological resume
  2. Technical chronological resume.
  3. Prior experience chronological resume.
  4. Education focused chronological resume.
