The Functional Resume layout is organized around skills rather than work history. This format is good for highlighting your knowledge and achievements in a way that is independent of where you acquired those skills.

This layout is very useful for:
  • job seekers with gaps in their employment dates,
  • career changers and
  • those who have a variety of career experiences.

The skills and functions you choose to include can be from recent or past paid positions, volunteer positions or are skills that have been developed in other arenas, such as those who have been out of the work force but have utilized a variety of skills in managing a home.

The Functional resume is an accepted style widely used and successful for a lot of people every day, however some employment agencies and Human Resources personnel are sometimes suspicious of Functional Resumes, because of it’s format and flexibility, as they may wonder what the job seeker is trying to hide.
